2006 - 2007
WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING? MARCH 2007 Hasn't the Garden looked magnificent these past few weeks? The colour of the snowdrops, the crocus and the several species of daffodils have really warmed the heart as one comes along the Crescent. The squirrels have been very active too! JANUARY, FEBRUARY and MARCH 2007 The last Sunday of these three months found the Garden stalwarts armed with picker-uppers, rubber gloves, buckets of warm water, hoes, spades tackling the rubbish and dog crap in the Garden. You name it - we find it, pick it up and dispose of it! It's a sociable occasion and it would be good if more people turned up to enjoy the craic. DECEMBER 2006 - BLUBELL PLANTING Over 1,000 wild blubells bulbs were planted to add to the hundreds planted in the early years of of the renovation of the Garden; local primary school children had been invited to help but unfortunately the bulbs were late in arriving and the weather changed from bad to atrocious so the date arranged with the schools was no longer suitable. However the Committee with the help of Council Parks staff planted the bulbs and we are lookinmg forward to seeing a sweep of blue at the Annadale Street end of the Garden. NOVEMBER 2006 - SCOTLAND-IN-BLOOM Merit Award Mitchell as Chair and Julie as Vice-Chair represented the Friends at an Awards Ceremony held in Perth in early November. This was organised by Beautiful Scotland in Bloom and the Friends were awarded a Merit certificate. The judges made the following comments about Hopetoun Crescent Garden: This small, delightful inner-city garden not only benefits from a significant history within Edinburgh's rich botanical background, but also, in this day and age, it is a quiet oasis located within a very busy urban environment. The Friends of Hopetoun Crescent have, to date, achieved a blend of simple natural excellence harnessed to the academic resources of RBGE together with a fresh ongoing programme of plantings, mainenance and projects linking the present with the past and including all ages within the Community . OCTOBER 10th 2006 - the AGM This was held in the Conference Room of the Bield Housing Association (Hopetoun Street) and we thank them for their generosity. Only a small group turned up but we all apprcaiated the chance not only to see a model of the new development planned for the Kwik Fit site on McDonald Road but also to speak to the architect and raise various points of concern; and some favourable comments were also made. The Speaker for the evening was Keith Logie from Edinburgh City Council who spoke on the recently published Edinbugh Parks and Gardens Strategy which we found interesting and informative. He was also pressed on the non-appearance of the long promised new benches and standpipe and action was promised! Details of the new committe can be found in the Management Committee section. |
